‘Rio’ Dominates DVD Sales Chart for Third Straight Week

The animated family feature Rio, from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, was again the country’s top-selling disc the week ending Aug. 21 – the third consecutive week the film, which grossed more than $143 million in U.S. theaters, has topped the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart.

But this time, it was no easy victory. Rio faced stiff competition from both Dexter: The Fifth Season, from Paramount, and Sony Pictures’ Priest, a post-apocalyptic vampire thriller that earned $29 million in theaters.

Dexter finished at No. 2 on First Alert, selling 78 percent as many units as Rio despite a significantly higher price. Priest (No. 3) sold about two-thirds as many units as Rio, but bumped the animated film from the top spot on Nielsen’s dedicated Blu-ray Disc chart. Priest generated 52 percent of its total unit sales from Blu-ray Disc, compared to 31 percent for Rio and just 17 percent for Dexter, which debuted at No. 4 on the Blu-ray Disc chart, just behind Universal Studios’ The Big Lebowski, making its Blu-ray debut.

Another new release, Warner’s Something Borrowed, a romantic comedy that grossed $39 million in theaters, debuted at No. 4 on First Alert and No. 6 on the Blu-ray chart, behind Universal’s Paul, which slipped to No. 5 its sophomore week after debuting at No. 2 the previous week. Paul also fell from No. 2 to No. 5 on First Alert.

On Home Media Magazine’s rental chart for the week, 20th Century Fox snagged the top spot with Limitless, which just came off its 28-day holdback from Netflix and Redbox. Priest debuted at No. 2.
