‘Rio’ debuts at $55 million overseas

The 3-D animated movie “Rio” doesn’t fly into U.S. theaters for another week, but it’s already a hit overseas.

The family film about birds that embark on a Brazilian adventure opened in 72 foreign markets this weekend and collected a strong $55 million, according to an estimate from distributor 20th Century Fox. The movie opened in the No. 1 slot in 32 foreign markets, including Mexico, Germany and China. And the film did the majority of its business in 3-D theaters, which made up 71% of overall ticket sales.

“Rio” was originally slated to premiere in the U.S. this weekend. When the domestic release date was changed, many of the international dates were left intact because a number of schools were out on holiday abroad.

Not surprisingly, the movie had one of its best debuts in Brazil, where it grossed $8.3 million — the biggest-ever opening for an animated film in the country. Fox unveiled a strong promotional push in the capital city, sending a number of press outlets to its March 22 premiere there.

In Russia, “Rio” was previewed in theaters early, so it had a slightly higher gross of $10.4 million. That was the best opening of any film this year in that country.

The film opens in 19 additional foreign markets, including France and Italy, next weekend.

well I’m very glad for all this box office success.

But in my home city people hardly listen to the original voicetrack. They usually listen to the one in the local language here. (If you want to get the English version you have to pay more and go to a more posh cinema.)

Don’t know if that will also be the case for other countries.

Wow, Jesse will finally have money to purchase new wardrobe.

Hope the film does well in the US.

LOL at your comment Laurie, but no! I bet all the money he’ll earn from this movie will go to his cats

LOL at both of YOUR comments you two.

But it’s not like his dislike of shopping has any links to his income… he did TSN, he should have more than enough to get a new wardrobe.

I think he just hates the whole ordeal of shopping and the whole mental burden of trying to think what to wear, how to impress people…

(this is from somebody who wears the same jacket for 2 months every single day except when i have to wash it, and the same shoes for the whole last half year, and wears a cycle through the same 5 plain-coloured T-shirts throughout the month.)

maybe we’ll be staring at the same black Timberland jacket and the New Balance shoes and the red baseball cap, not to mention the same plain dark-blue shirts and T-shirts, the occasional grey hoodie, 2 years from now on.

We might have to accept the fact that getting rich and famous probably isn’t going to change his wardrobe….
    well, that’s Jesse for you.

I like that he doesn’t change his clothes very often. I actually like it when people wear the same clothes for a longer period of time. To me it just signals relaxness and friendliness

I agree, JuL & Selma! It’s just not his personality to get caught up with all this Hollywood frivolousness of “never wear the same thing twice” rule at public events. But you have to admit, it’s fun joking about how all his money goes to his cats :)
