That’s interesting to hear you say, especially since you were originally cast as Marshall. How far into the process did you get before making the switch?
Pretty close. We were three weeks away from shooting and Jesse Eisenberg, the guy who was going to play Sam, left to go do “The Social Network” which was obviously a very smart career decision. I had rehearsed with him for a long time, for about a year and a half actually. It was almost like a play – I pretty much knew not only the two main boys’ roles but the dialogue of all the characters in the film. I felt like I could have played Uma Thurman’s character by the time we were ready to film.It was hugely insightful for me to watch Jesse act in the role before I did.

Best Film: The Social Network

Laura
/ April 8, 2011What role is Jesse? And what movie are they talking about?
JuL
/ April 9, 2011@Laura: it’s Ceremony directed by Max Wrinkler… that’s in the source.
http://uk.imdb.com/title/tt1341341/
Basically Jesse was supposed to be the leading actor playing the character Sam and Michael here was to play Sam’s best friend Marshall. Then 3 weeks before shooting commencement, Jesse left to do TSN with Fincher, and Michael got casted as Sam instead….
Laurie
/ April 9, 2011I bet they’re pissed. That’s one way of saying, “The Social Network is better than Ceremony.” And I’m sure it is.
JuL
/ April 9, 2011I gotta say, I think Jesse would be stupid if he didn’t take on Fincher’s offer. XD
Ceremony might have turned out very well, but I think there isn’t any doubt TSN was an opportunity that had to be grabbed.
I could be wrong but it seems to me Max Wrinkler and Michael Angarano are nice enough to acknowledge that, though indirectly…. Max Wrinkler said “Jesse Eisenberg’s a good friend of ours too, and he’s a very inspiring guy and a great writer.” when he was asked whom he might like to cast.
So to me it feels like he’s trying to say: no grudges held, don’t worry about it man, we understand perfectly. Even though he doesn’t sound exactly hopeful.
Angarano of course I can’t imagine holding a grudge. He got the best of the situation…. if Jesse hadn’t left the choice wouldn’t have been open to him.
Also he was honest enough to say that “It was hugely insightful for me to watch Jesse act in the role before I did.”
I bet it was…. I haven’t seen Ceremony but the role description for Sam is a fast talker XD
JuL
/ April 9, 2011oh I meant to type “Max Wrinkler said [....] when he was asked whom he might like to cast next.”
cecille
/ April 9, 2011Nice of them to say those things about Jesse. And now I’m really curious of Jesse’s written works.
He made the right decision of course in choosing TSN over this — I wouldn’t have known about him had it not been for TSN! Anyways, “Ceremony” opening in limited release this weekend in the US only has a 41% rating in Rotten Tomatoes. Not good.
JuL
/ April 9, 2011well, since Jesse isn’t on it any more… I’m not really interested. LOL.
if it’s only got 41% rating, then I’m even more thankful that TSN came in for Jesse. No regrets then.
JuL
/ April 9, 2011and I just all of a sudden found out I’ve been getting the director’s name wrong all along… it’s Max Winkler. sorry for the extra “r”. Oops.
btw, I didn’t quite like that Max Winkler mentioned Michael Cera along with Jesse… I could be over-interpretive but it feels like he thinks of Cera and Jesse as interchangeable actors or something. As actors with the same amount of skill and the same demeanor and pretty much the same value.
cecille
/ April 10, 2011JuL, I didn’t quite catch on that but I get your point. LOL at the notion that they’re even on the same level.
Laurie
/ April 10, 2011@Jul Totally agree with your statements.
I actually think mentioning Jesse slated to star in their movie is a good marketing move for them lmao.
JuL
/ April 10, 2011@Laurie:
That’s cutting, but XDDDDDDDDDD so very true.
I mean, if they didn’t mention Jesse, I would never have heard of this film.
Steph
/ April 10, 2011Mike & Max have only had great things to say about working with Jesse in every interview – even those taped so you can see there’s no hesitation in their answers either. I don’t think they’re pissed at all as both have acknowledged it would be a stupid thing to turn down. And I say all this having read and watched every interview they’ve done over the course of promotion, since I run a site for Michael too.
And Jesse was signed on for a good while before news of The Social Network even came around. So, I guess it would seem like mentioning him is a marketing move if you weren’t aware of that news 2 years ago. However, I’m sure this fact would’ve been mentioned regardless. Even if Jesse had left to do a much smaller movie and was never a part of TSN. Since swapping actors so late into filming would be a talking point for promotion. It’s not like any of these interviewers had to dig to find Jesse’s name attached, because like I said, it was news before the Social Network became anything.
JuL
/ April 10, 2011@ Steph:
Sorry if our comments sounded stupidly rude or offensive. It really wasn’t intended.
Anyway Winkler and Angarano are very clear about there being no grudges whatsoever. That’s indisputable.
